Plumbing Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful Information from Geraldton Plumbing Experts
Got questions about blocked drains, emergency services, or what to expect during a call-out? You’re in the right place. Our FAQs are here to give you clarity, confidence, and peace of mind before you book.
Why is my water pressure low (or suddenly high)?
Low pressure can come from clogged tap aerators/showerheads, a partially closed valve, a failing pressure-reducing valve, leaks, or council mains work. Sudden drops or spikes should be checked promptly—they can indicate a burst, a faulty valve, or unsafe system pressure.
Why do my pipes bang or vibrate when I turn taps off?
That’s usually water hammer—a pressure shock when water flow stops quickly. Fixes include pressure checks/adjustment, securing loose pipework, fitting water-hammer arrestors, and using slow-close tap cartridges or valves.
My hot water isn’t hot—what should I check first?
- Make sure the power/breaker or gas supply is on.
- Check the pilot (for gas storage) or display (for continuous-flow).
- Ensure the temperature control hasn’t been turned down.
If the cylinder’s relief valve is discharging constantly, there’s a burning smell, or the unit trips power—turn it off and call us.
Why is my tap dripping or the toilet running?
Worn washers, cartridges, or seals let water seep through. Toilets often need a new flapper/valve or a float adjustment. Small leaks waste thousands of litres a year—repairs are quick and cost-effective.
What can and can’t go down the drain?
Do not dispose of fats, oils & grease (FOG), “flushable” wipes, sanitary items, cotton buds, coffee grounds, food scraps, paint, solvents, or harsh chemicals. These cause blockages and pipe damage. Bin them or use proper disposal facilities. Only water, human waste, and toilet paper should be flushed.
How do I find and use my main shut-off (and gas isolation) valve?
Your main water toby is usually at the front boundary near the meter—turn clockwise to shut off. Many homes also have an internal isolation valve near the hot water cylinder. Gas isolation valves are next to the meter or at the appliance. If you smell gas: turn it off, ventilate, avoid flames/switches, and call us immediately.
How often should my plumbing be serviced?
Hot water cylinders: visual check annually; test the relief valve every 6 months; anode inspection (where fitted) every 3–5 years.
Gas appliances: safety service yearly by a licensed gasfitter.
Backflow devices (where required): annual testing.
General plumbing: a yearly check can catch leaks, corrosion, and pressure issues early—saving water and preventing damage.
When should I call for an emergency plumber?
Call us if you have a burst pipe, flooding, no water supply, sewage backing up, or a gas/water leak. These issues need immediate attention to prevent damage or health risks.
How quickly can you get to me in an emergency?
We aim to be on site within the hour, depending on your location and traffic. We’ll always give you an accurate estimated arrival time when you call.
What should I do while waiting for the plumber?
If safe, turn off your water at the main shut-off valve (or gas isolation valve if it’s a gas issue). Mop up excess water and move belongings out of harm’s way. Don’t try major repairs yourself.
Do you charge extra for emergency callouts?
Yes, emergency callouts outside normal working hours carry a higher rate. We’ll explain the callout fee and hourly rate before dispatching an engineer.
What information do you need when I call?
Tell us your name, address, contact number, the problem you’re facing, and if you’ve managed to isolate the water/gas. The more detail you give, the quicker we can help.
Can you fix the problem on the spot?
In most cases, yes. Our vans carry common parts and tools. If specialist parts are needed, we’ll make a safe temporary repair and return promptly to complete the job.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. All our labour is guaranteed, so if a repair we’ve carried out fails within the guarantee period, we’ll put it right.
How long is the warranty on parts and fittings?
It depends on the manufacturer, but most parts come with a 12-month warranty. We’ll confirm the cover before fitting.
What if a problem comes back after you’ve fixed it?
Call us straight away. If it’s within our guarantee period, we’ll revisit at no extra labour charge.
Are emergencies covered by a warranty too?
Yes. Even if we’ve done the job out of hours, the same guarantees apply to the work we’ve completed.
What’s not covered under your warranty?
Damage caused by misuse, tampering, or general wear and tear isn’t covered. We’ll always explain what is and isn’t included.
How do I make a warranty claim?
Just call us with your invoice number and details of the issue. We’ll arrange a visit to inspect and resolve it quickly.
